The Staff Operations Division is comprised of several bureaus and units within the department. This division includes the detective bureau, records bureau, property control, information technology, crime prevention/data analysis, and the accident investigation team.

Detective Bureau
Detectives, lead by a supervising sergeant, are responsible for investigating criminal incidents, gathering evidence and witness statements, and building cases for potential prosecution.

Records Bureau
The Records Bureau is staffed by civilian employees, under the supervision of a police lieutenant, and is responsible for data entry of statistical information, processing criminal incident and accident reports, non-criminal fingerprinting, gun permit and concealed weapons paperwork and provides copies of various reports to the public.

Property Control Clerk
The Property Control Clerk is responsible for storing and tracking all property brought into the department. This property can be either evidence or found property.

Information Technology
The Information Technology person is responsible for all public safety computer systems and all peripheral software for specialized units. In addition, this person also acts as a technical liaison to outside agencies and as the direct liaison to the internal Canton ITS department.
Crime Prevention Unit
The Crime Prevention Unit focuses on crime and data to locate patterns in the community. This information assists the department in specifically targeting crime problems. Crime prevention through public education is also a key component for this unit.

Ordinance Enforcement Unit
The Ordinance Enforcement Unit consists of four ordinance officers whose primary duty is enforcing property standards. In addition, each ordinance officer is assigned to a community policing team to work directly with police officers and fire inspectors on dealing with problems occurring in commercial and residential areas.

Accident Investigation Team
The Accident Investigation Team is comprised of six police officers and one detective. These highly trained officers investigate traffic crashes involving fatal accidents and accidents resulting in life-threatening injuries.
