If I call EMS can I go to any hospital I want?
Wayne County medical control has the ultimate authority as to which hospital you may be transported to. The patient's preference is a major consideration in addition to the extent of the injuries and the current capabilities of the hospital. If at all possible, we will transport to the hospital of your preference.

Is there a charge for EMS service?
Residents requiring transport to the hospital are billed $350; nonresidents are billed $500. It has been our experience that your medical insurance will pay for this service.

Canton Police and Fire Departments are funded through special assessment millage on all real property in Canton. The special assessments were approved by the voters in 1976 (Fire) and 1977 (Police).

What is HAZMAT?
This is a team of firefighters who are able to respond to incidents where hazardous materials are present. The HAZMAT team is comprised of firefighters whose departments are a member of the Western Wayne County Mutual Aid Association. HAZMAT members are able to respond to incidents as a unit or can provide expert consultation to their individual departments. The main benefit of this team is that it offers fire departments a cost-effective way to provide HAZMAT services when needed.

What type of Emergency Medical Service does Canton offer?
The department offers Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS). More than 70 percent of all department transports are ALS. Our firefighters utilize the latest equipment and training to ensure that the patient receives the best pre-hospital care possible. There are at least two ALS units in service at all times.

The Fire Department has three stations including a headquarters at Canton Center and Heritage Drive, a sub-station on Warren west of Haggerty and a sub-station on Denton north of Cherry Hill.

What is the Fire Prevention unit?
The Fire Prevention program is designed and instructed by department personnel. Fire inspections, fire prevention consulting and lectures are just a few of the strategies the department uses to help keep fire incidents to a minimum. The fire safety house is the mainstay of the department's public education program. This is a specially designed mobile display which allows children to safely experience "home fire" situations. The fire safety house travels to Canton elementary and middle schools throughout the school year.
