The Fire Prevention unit is led by Fire Marshal Frank Barrett. He and his staff of three fire inspectors are responsible for making sure new and existing buildings meet fire code regulations.
Perhaps the Canton Fire Department's best firefighting tool is prevention. Through a consistent public education effort, the department has been able to substantially reduce the number of fires in the community.
The fire safety house is the mainstay of the department's public education program. This is a specially designed mobile display which allows children to safely experience "home fire" situations. The fire safety house travels to Canton elementary and middle schools throughout the school year. The program is designed and instructed by department personnel. Fire inspections, fire prevention consulting and lectures are just a few of the strategies the department uses to help keep fire incidents to a minimum.
Following are some of the fire prevention services the department performs:
- Fire Inspections
- Fire Prevention Consulting
- Fire Investigations
- Fire Safety Lectures
- CPR and First Aid Classes
- Babysitter Training
- Juvenile Firesetter Program
- Plan Review/Site Plan Review
- Evacuation Training
- Fire Extinguisher Training
