Technology, training and dedication are the tools Canton's Fire Department uses in fighting fires in our community. The department recently took delivery of its new 2007 Pierce aerial platform truck. The township board approved the purchase of the vehicle last year for a price of $818,500.
The new truck will provide firefighters unprecedented access to roofs of commercial buildings, various public assemblies, and the roofs of many single and multiple family homes that are significantly set back from the road. The vehicle also provides the department with unique rescue capabilities with its versatile 100 foot ladder and platform.
The addition of this new truck to the department's arsenal of firefighting vehicles will be beneficial to Canton. The truck joins a fleet of pumper and tanker trucks, along with a highly mobile grass-fire unit capable of going where big rigs can't to fight small blazes, and a heavy rescue unit which carries heavy equipment such as breathing apparatus, hand tools and lighting.
New technology is helping firefighters do their jobs better, too. The department now has two thermal imaging cameras that allow firefighters to literally see through smoke. The camera can spot an injured person through the heaviest smoke and also show firefighters "hot spots" even after all flames appear to be extinguished.
All of this technology and equipment doesn't mean much without proper training, however. The department conducts on-going training for its firefighters so that basic fire fighting techniques stay sharp and updated. The department's highest ranking officers also receive training such as Eastern Michigan University's Staff & Command School.
