May 23, 2008, Canton, MI - Canton Fire Department held its 9th Annual Awards Ceremony last night.  In addition to numerous firefighters receiving awards, 14 civilians were honored for heroic acts performed last year, including 9-year old Zachary Lazanja.  Lazanja received a Civilian Citation for rescuing his 8-year old friend from drowning in a backyard swimming pool.  Other awards given out included life saving, unit awards and certificates of merit. 

Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Firefighter Dave Holloway.  Holloway was recognized for his tireless and thorough work ethic, as well as his team building and leadership skills.  Holloway mentors new firefighters encouraging them to make the most of their training program.  He has also encouraged fellow firefighters to take part in voluntary physical fitness programs to better prepare themselves for the physical demands placed on firefighters.  Though his meritorious service, Holloway continuously strives to advance the mission of the Fire Department.   

The traditional Ironman award went to Firefighter Frank Palumbo for participating in 646 fire and EMS incidents in 2007.  Palumbo remained thorough, conscientious, ambitious and enthusiastic while responding to more runs than any other firefighter last year.

The evening was enjoyed by 200 employees, family and friends who paid tribute to those being recognized for meritorious service which contributed significantly to the accomplishment of the Canton Fire Department.
