Political election signs

June 11, 2008, Canton, MI - Over the next several months, election signs advertising candidates running for office will begin to appear around Canton.  The Public Safety Department reminds residents and candidates of Cantons Sign Ordinance regulating the placement of signs.

Political signs will not be allowed in any public right of way or dedicated easement.  Political signs are also not permitted within 100 feet of an election precinct door entrance.

Both of these regulations will be strictly enforced by the Canton Police Departments Ordinance Enforcement Unit.  Responsibility for any violation occurring regarding the placement of signs will fall on the person, business, candidate or committee whose name appears on the advertising.

In conjunction with the Ordinance Enforcement Units philosophy of compliance through education prior to enforcement, they are requesting full cooperation of all candidates seeking public office, as well as from those supporting them.

In the event of a violation the following steps will occur:

--Each act of violation, and each day upon which the violation continues to exist, will constitute a separate offense.

--The person whose name appears on the sign (advertising) will be held responsible for the placement of the sign.

--Any signs found to be placed in areas violating the Canton Sign Ordinance shall be removed and disposed of.

--Initial violations will result in the sign being removed and a warning being issued.

--Subsequent violations occur thereafter, will be issued a citation.

Cantons Sign Ordinance is available in the Clerks office or on the web at www.canton-mi.org.  Contact the Ordinance Enforcement Unit at 734/394-5335 for questions relating to the placement of signs.
