Hotel fire update

January 23, 2008, 2:00 p.m., Canton, MI - The Fire Investigation Team has determined that the cause of the fire was accidental. Their investigation revealed there was a mattress fire in one of the guest rooms between 3 3:30 a.m. The guest in the room contacted the manager and advised them there had been a fire that they believed it to be extinguished and inquired on the availability of another room. When no other room was available, the guest in the room left. 

At 4:42 a.m., the department received its first 911 call indicating a fire in the building.

January 23, 2008, Canton, MI
At approximately 4:44 a.m., Canton Fire and Police responded to a reported hotel fire at Days Inn, 40500 Michigan Avenue. The department received multiple calls reporting the fire, and smoke and flames were visible to responding units.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the upper floor of one building fully involved in flames. Master streams were set up from the department’s 100 foot platform truck to control the fire. Once the fire was brought under control it was determined that twelve second floor units were involved and sustained heavy flame damage. Twelve first floor units underneath the fire floor sustained water damage. All residents were accounted for and have been placed in other rooms at the hotel. There were no reported injuries.

The Fire Investigation Team is on the scene working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
