Early warning siren system repaired
September 15, 2008, Canton, MI Due to false activations of the early warning siren system, Cantons siren system vendor performed a thorough check of all the warning sirens during the week of August 11, 2008. This coincided with periodic maintenance that was coming due on the sirens.
The process included replacing some batteries, checking high and low voltage, checking radio reception, resealing boxes and a complete check of electronics both at the pole and in dispatch. Each siren was activated to ensure its operation. Because rainwater was suspected in the false activations, it was important to experience some rainfall to declare the problem resolved.
After experiencing the substantial rainfall this past weekend without a malfunction, we are confident the problems have been addressed and the siren system is in proper working order, said Emergency Management Planner Kathy Rich.
If you believe you hear a false activation, please notify the Public Safety Department at 734/394-5400 with the date, time and approximate location of the siren.
