March 29-April 4 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Michigan
March 23, 2009, Canton, MI - In conjunction with Severe Weather Awareness Week, Canton's Emergency Management Unit encourages residents to review thunderstorm, lightening and tornado safety procedures. Canton residents should not be complacent when it comes to severe weather. Michigan's history has many significant severe weather events that unfortunately have caused millions of dollars in damage to property; along with injuries and deaths.
The best time to prepare for severe weather is before it happens. Have a plan in place. Be sure everyone knows where to go and what to do in case of severe weather, no matter where you are.
As a reminder to residents, Canton Public Safety operates a township-wide Outdoor Warning Siren System that is activated when a funnel cloud is detected. The system is also activated when straight-line winds are reported over 70 mph.
The Outdoor Warning Siren System is designed to notify people outdoors of the impending dangerous weather, and that they should seek shelter immediately. If shelter is not available, people should seek the lowest ground level. Motorists should try to find shelter outside of their vehicle.
