Definition of a snow emergency in Canton
January 8, 2010, Canton, MI – A snow emergency is declared for the purpose of clearing streets for snow removal and allowing accessibility of streets for Public Safety vehicle response. In declaring a snow emergency, consideration must be given to the amount of snow fall and/or severe weather vs. commitment of department resources to ensure compliance. Canton Public Safety declares a snow emergency when snow amounts of generally 5" or more are predicted. Also taken into consideration are the following prevailing weather conditions: •Continuation of snow •High winds / drifts •Warming conditions •Sleet, rain, etc. During a snow emergency, residents cannot park their vehicles on township roads. Compliance is met voluntarily by citizen compliance, citizen contact by the Police Department to ensure compliance, and an Emergency Traffic Order with enforcement action being ticketing and/or towing.
