Local News Station Helps Police Find Owner of Gravestone
In the fall of 2003, a Canton resident turned in a gravestone found on his property, with the names Bert & Virginia Woody engraved on it, to the Canton Police Department. The department's property clerk searched local cemeteries with negative results, so the gravestone was held in the police department's property room for the owner to hopefully claim someday.
Recently Fox 2 News reporter Paul Herdtner was at the police department covering another story when he noticed the gravestone, and inquired about it to the property clerk. When he found out it had been unclaimed for over two years, he decided to research it for a story. Fox 2 News found the Woody's daughter, Connie Krocker of Brighton, and contacted her about the found gravestone. Krocker said the gravestone was made by the VA after her father passed away and was lost or stolen somewhere during the delivery process.
Last week Mrs. Krocker picked up the gravestone from the police department and will have it placed at her parents' grave site in Southfield. Krocker was grateful to Fox 2 and Canton Police, as well as to the person who originally found it back in 2003.
