In conjunction with Governor Jennifer Granholm, Canton's Board of Trustees have proclaimed the week of March 26–April 1, 2006, as Severe Weather Awareness Week. During this week, Canton residents are encouraged to learn more about the risks associated with severe weather and become familiar with the information necessary to help them protect themselves and their property in the event of severe weather.

Canton is susceptible to a variety of severe weather events, including flooding, tornadoes, straight lined winds, severe thunderstorms (including dangerous lightening) and sustained heat and drought. Residents are urged to be aware and prepared to protect themselves, their property and their families.

During this week, Canton residents should review their emergency preparedness procedures so they are ready if/when severe weather hits. Canton Public Safety's Emergency Management division encourages Canton residents to:

• Become familiar with various severe weather alert
• Have a preparedness kit for home and car, to include first aid kit, flashlight, portable radio and extra batteries
• Monitor NOAA Weather radio and local radio, television and cable stations
• Keep an eye on the sky
