Pandemic Flu Planning

The potential outbreak of the H5N1 avian flu virus has been in the media and on the minds of many people lately. In fact, ABC recently aired a made for television movie on the subject. While the movie did serve to raise awareness about avian and pandemic flu, it is emergency management official's hope that it will inspire preparation –not panic. Some important facts to help keep things in perspective are:

  • There is no influenza pandemic in the world at this time
  • It is important to remember that H5N1 avian influenza is almost exclusively a disease of birds. The H5N1 virus has not yet appeared in the U.S.
  • Should the H5N1 virus appear in the U.S., it does not mean the start of a pandemic.

What can Canton residents do to be prepared? Start by keeping a supply of food, water and medicines on hand in case you have to stay home. Practice good public health measures like frequent hand washing and staying home when sick. Put together a disaster supplies kit. Go on line for a copy of "A Family Preparedness Guide" at www.canton-mi.org/publicsafety or call Canton’s Emergency Management Office at 734-394-5357 for a copy. The Michigan Dept. of Community Health also has a booklet "Preparing for a Public Health Emergency" available by calling 1-517-335-8150.
