Eight year-old Canton boy rescues drowning friend

For Release 06/07/07

On Saturday, June 2, Canton resident Zachary Lazanja, 8 years old, rescued his 8 year-old friend from a backyard swimming pool. The boys were at a pool party with several other people when the incident occurred. While diving in the deep end of the pool, Zachary’s friend suffered a seizure and was unable to swim. Realizing his friend was in danger, Zachary dove to the bottom of the pool and brought his friend to the surface. The boys’ mothers removed the unconscious victim from the pool and began emergency life saving procedures, including CPR. Their efforts proved successful. When Canton Fire Department paramedics arrived on the scene, the boy was conscious and breathing on his own. He was transported to the hospital for additional treatment and has since been discharged with no ill effects.

While all involved are to be commended, had it not been for the heroic action of 8 year-old Zachary Lazanja, this incident might have ended differently. Zachary’s efforts will be recognized by the Canton Board of Trustees at their June 26 meeting, and again by the Canton Fire Department at their next awards ceremony.
