Practice fire safety over the holidays
November 28, 2007, Canton, MI – Canton Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Unit would like to remind everyone of the importance of fire safety during the holiday season. “With all of the hectic schedules this time of year, people should stop and take a few minutes to review some basic fire safety tips and incorporate them into their home for the holidays,” said Fire Marshal Frank Barrett. "Unfortunately simple things like a damaged extension cord can turn holiday festivities into a tragedy,” he adds.
It is recommended everyone read and practice the following suggestions:
•Have working smoke detectors in your home, and check the batteries
•Have a fire extinguisher and know how to use it
•Only use UL (Underwriters Laboratory) listed lights to decorate
•Do not plug more than 3 light strands together
•Do not leave your lights unattended
•Do not overload your electrical outlets with extension cords
•If you use extension cords, periodically touch them to make sure they are not warm to the touch
•If extension cords are warm, disconnect and throw in the trash
•Watch what you cook; never leave it unattended
•Avoid using candles, and never use a lit candle on a Christmas tree
•Use sturdy candle holders and never put a candle next to a flammable item
•While selecting a tree, the needles should be hard to pull off the branch
•Keep real trees watered daily
