Canton Fire Department held its 8th Annual Awards Ceremony last night, honoring firefighters and civilians with a variety of awards including a Civilian Commendation, Life Saving and Firefighter of the Year.

This year's Firefighter of the Year award went to Fire Marshal Frank Barrett for his responsibility over all fire prevention activities within the department, including fire inspections, fire investigations, public education programs and plan reviews. Fire Marshal Barrett has played an integral role in the department placing an unprecedented emphasis in educating the public on the prevention of fires.

This department's traditional Ironman award went to Firefighter Michael Thoms for his meritorious service performed in 2006. During this period Firefighter Thoms participated in 637 fire and EMS incidents, which is more than any other firefighter. Firefighter Thoms has proven to be thorough, conscientious, ambitious and enthusiastic.

In attendance last night were 200 employees, family and friends making the award ceremony a complete success.
