Police conduct address verifications for local registered sex offenders
September 24, 2007, Canton, MI - Canton Police Department’s sex offender violator task force recently performed "knock & talks" by checking on all registered sex offenders listed with a Canton address. The department conducts these "knock & talks" periodically to confirm offenders are actually residing at their registered addresses.
"While confirming the residential addresses listed are correct, we are able to stay familiar with the offenders, and maintain a high-profile accountability factor," said Sergeant Deb Newsome.
Task force efforts paid off as police were able to determine four (4) individuals who had failed to register their new address. "Felony warrants have been recommended to the prosecutor on these individuals," adds Newsome. In addition, police were able to track down an individual who not only reported an incorrect address, but also had a felony warrant out for his arrest on a Criminal Sexual Conduct charge.
The Michigan Sex Offender Act requires persons convicted of certain sexual offenses to register their address information and changes with their local police department. Persons convicted of a felony are required to verify information quarterly. Persons convicted under a misdemeanor are required to verify information yearly.
Canton presently has 59 residents on the public sex offender registry. Offenses range from Indecent Exposure to violations of Criminal Sexual Conduct, first degree. Canton Police Department recognizes the importance of Michigan’s sex offender registration law, and is making every effort to ensure compliance with all aspects of the legislation. The department’s sex offender task force takes rapid enforcement action on all violators.
A list of all registered sex offenders living in Canton may be viewed at the Canton Police Department, located at 1150 S. Canton Center Road, or online at www.mipsor.state.mi.us.
The Canton Police Department will continue to randomly check persons on the sex offender list who reside in Canton to ensure they are incompliance with the requirements under state law.
