September 26, 2007, Canton, MI – Canton Police Department has been chosen by Government Technology to receive a 2007 Michigan Excellence in Technology Award for Best IT Collaboration Among Organizations.  Representatives from the department will be presented with their award during the 5th Annual Michigan Digital Government Summit held at the Lansing Center in Lansing, on Thursday, October 4, 2007.

Also receiving the award with Canton will be Oakland County CLEMIS, the host agency to Public Safety’s new website and the department’s computer program provider.  CLEMIS provides technical solutions through a cooperative effort that are affordable and efficient for criminal justice and public safety agencies of all sizes.  CLEMIS hosts participating agency websites that are designed around the concept of community-oriented policing, publishing maps detailing crime activity, community information, department services and other information relevant to improving community relations and alleviating some crimes by increasing public awareness.

”Members of our department worked closely with CLEMIS staff in the development and deployment of the new site.  It was evident during the entire project that the working partnership established between the two organizations was going to be productive and beneficial to the community,” said Public Safety Director John Santomauro.  He adds, “Both sides worked hard to bring this project together and we are dedicated to continually looking for ways to enhance the site to better serve our residents, businesses and community organizations needs.”

Highlights of the new website include crime mapping and crime statistics, community and crime alerts, informative public safety and public service announcement videos, press releases, police and fire services provided, and a comprehensive safety tip section including handouts, brochures and presentations on police, fire and emergency management topics.

”I encourage everyone to take a look at our new website and see all that is has to offer,” said Santomauro.
