Accident reconstructionists and investigators comprise the team, which is called into action 15 to 20 times per year. The team is most commonly used in fatal accidents, accidents involving life-threatening injuries or injuries requiring helicopter medical transport. Once activated, the team handles all aspects of the accident scene.

Duties include:
- evidence collection
- photography
- talking to witnesses
- taking blood-alcohol tests if applicable
Technology has changed the way the team processes the accident scene. Measurement, for example, use to be done with tape measures. A "total station" and prism are now used and give investigators more precise readings. Team members have the added advantage of having the department's Mobile Command Unit on scene for investigations.
