Traffic Safety Enforcement Program
In 2006, the department began a proactive traffic safety enforcement program, designed to reduce the number of accidents occurring at high traffic crash areas. To accomplish this goal, the department studies accident data to determine the high traffic crash areas, as well as the most frequent causes of the accidents occurring. Special Enforcement Officers are then assigned to work these problem intersections ensuring compliance with traffic laws, placing emphasis on the violations determined to be the most frequent cause of accidents at that particular location. Signs are posted during enforcement times, advising drivers of the traffic enforcement zone. While working the intersection, officers also evaluate the traffic signals and signs in the area, making notes for possible changes needed by the Wayne County Road Commission or the Michigan Department of Transportation. As motorists are probably aware, the intersection of Ford and Haggerty is the highest crash intersection in the community, and for that reason was chosen to be the first target of the police department's new program.

Special Enforcement Details
The Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) works traffic complaints called in by residents or business owners in Canton. When a complaint is called in the information is forwarded to the SEU where an officer will review the information and determine if it will be investigated by the unit or handled by road patrol.
If the complaint is investigated by the SEU, an officer will monitor the location for two days, with violations being issued. If a persistent probem is identified by the officer, he will continue to work that location for a longer period of time. The complaintant is then notified of the enforcement results by mail. If the location was recently worked, the complaintant will be advised of the previous enforcement efforts by mail.
If the complaint is forwarded to road patrol, it is likely that it is an ongoing complaint worked by the SEU in the past.
Traffic concerns should be reported to the department at 734-394-5400. Callers should be ready to explain their concern to the call taker, including the location, days and times of the week the problem is occurring.

Click It or Ticket Prgoram
Canton Police Department regularly participates in Michigan's well-known Click It or Ticket program throughout the year. Extra patrol officers are assigned to specifically enforce seatbelt use by drivers and passengers. Enforcement zones have signs alerting motorists of the action in progress. The focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is to increase awareness of, and compliance with, Michigan's safety belt and child passenger safety laws.
In Michigan, state law requires:
-All front seat passangers to be buckled up
-All passengers under age 16 to be buckled up in either the front or rear seating positions
-All children under age 4 to be restrained in an approved child safety seat in either the front or rear seating positions
For more information on the Click It or Ticket program contact the department at 734-394-5400.
