How to File a Complaint Against the Department or an Employee
Complaints against the Canton Public Safety Department or one of its employees can be made either in person, by email, or by phone call. (Email is the least desirable method as it extends the time span necessary to collect all information vital to the investigation of the complaint.)

All complaints are thoroughly investigated by the employee's immediate supervisor. Findings are reviewed by the respective Deputy Director of Police or Fire, and a written response is sent to the complainant from the Director of Public Safety.
Supervisors receiving the complaint will collect all pertinent information regarding the complaint, including the citizen's name, address, and phone number. All complainants receive a written response to their complaint, usually within 30-days (investigation permitting).
Race, sex, age and ethnicity will also be requested of the complainant. The purpose of requesting this information is to allow administrators to track potential behavior patterns that may demonstrate a bias or prejudice on the part of the officer or firefighter. The information is also helpful in determining any training needs that may be necessary.
The department utilizes internal investigation software to record and track complaints.
